To Kill A Mocking Bird

What is censorship?

Censorship is a major controversy is the English high school curriculum. There are many arguments between teachers, school boards, and parents on whether a piece of literature that includes violence, racism, language, sex, and religion should be taught or not. Most parents believe by censoring literature it blocks their children from the negative content that could hurt them. But by doing so, students would not be able to learn about societal issues and they would not be able to share their own opinion on those situations. Parents are usually for censorship because they believe that certain literature is impressionable on their children and they do not want them to act out.

Atticus' famous speech

In Atticus’s speech in the courtroom during the trial, he does say the N-word but we must ignore the language and really take time to understand the importance of what he is actually saying. A book should not be banned because the censors do not want students to read about racism, violence, or the language. Instead a book should be taught because of it’s significant message that will educate students.
